Scaring the shit out of myself

My partner is out of town. That means I have the house to myself… I’m all alone… just me and my kitties… spooky!

Whenever my partner is away, I like to scare the shit out of myself by watching scary movies in complete darkness.

I like being scared. It gives me a rush. Maybe I’m an adrenaline junkie, but I’m too unathletic to chase that high via sports and too straight-laced to chase it via drugs. So, I’m left with getting my fill from scaring myself.

I love scary movies and scary video games (I like playing them or sometimes just watching others play them). I also really like reading scary books.

Okay, here is a non-exhaustive, impromptu list of my favorite horror media:

Movies

  1. The Shining. A classic. I saw the TV version at an inappropriately young age, and it scared me so much. The bathtub scene in particular stuck with me. I remember calling my parents to come pick me up from a sleepover because I was afraid there was a woman in my friend’s bathtub.
  2. It Follows. One of my favorites from the past decade (omg, it was released in 2014… that’s more than a decade old. I am old.) Not the scariest, but this movie has one of the greatest horror aesthetics of modern times.
  3. Bring Her Back. This one was fun as hell.
  4. Weapons. This was also fun as hell and such a refreshing horror movie.
  5. Civil War. While not a traditional horror movie, if you’ve seen it, you know how horrific and terrifying it is. This is probably the most scared I’ve felt while watching a movie in my adult years.
  6. Signs. There are two moments from this movie that scared the crap out of me as a child. If you know, you know.
  7. Cloverfield. I love a found footage movie. Shoutout to Paranormal Activity and Horror in the High Desert.

Video Games

  1. Phasmophobia. This was a fun one. I was obsessed when it came out. Genuinely terrifying.
  2. Dead by Daylight. Scary at first. But after playing for a while, it becomes less scary and more of just a game of tag involving killers and monsters.
  3. Resident Evil. I haven’t personally played these games, but watching Gab Smolders play these games is a lot of fun.

Books

  1. Incidents Around the House. Omg, this was such a freaky book. I love ghost/paranormal horror. I only allowed myself to read this book at night while listening to thunderstorm SFX. So, that really helped set the mood. But the story is so good.
  2. Hex. The premise of this book hooked me.
  3. This Thing Between Us. This was the first book that made me realize books could be scary!
  4. Penpal. This book frequently made my hair stand on end.
  5. Annihilation. Love cosmic horrorrrrr.

This was a pretty stream-of-consciousness post, which feels wrong when writing about something I love so much. Maybe I’ll write a more polished post on this in the future.
